Blood Donor Bunny
(BDB) Program
When rabbits need emergency blood transfusions, there's no blood bank to draw Every rabbit deserves emergency care when it matters most. The Blood Donor Bunny program ensures that donor access is never a barrier to life-saving veterinary treatment. We connect healthy donor rabbits with veterinary clinics that need them the most.
What Is the Blood Donor Bunny Program?
The BDB Program is a network of pre-vetted, healthy donor rabbits whose guardians have agreed to emergency transport for life-saving transfusions. We coordinate with veterinary clinics throughout Southern California to provide immediate access to compatible donors when seconds matter.
Over 3 years, we've successfully coordinated 11 emergency blood donor transports. Now we're formalizing the program to expand donor availability and response time.
Who Can Be a Blood Donor Bunny?
Your rabbit qualifies if:
Healthy with current veterinary records
Minimum 7 lbs (or clinic-specified weight)
Under 5-6 years old (clinic discretion for older rabbits)
Not on long-term medications (clinic discretion)
Guardian commits to emergency transport when called
Guardian provides access via keys or lockbox codes
Donation Schedule:
Once your rabbit donates, they cannot donate again for 6 months. This ensures their health and safety.
How the Program Works
Step 1: Guardian Enrollment
Complete our donor application with your rabbit's medical history, weight, and veterinary information.
What we need from you:
Rabbit's age, weight, and breed
Current vet contact + last wellness exam date
Any medications or health conditions
Your emergency contact information
Commitment to transport within 1-2 hours if called
Step 2: Clinic Approval
We submit your rabbit's information to partner veterinary clinics for approval based on their specific needs and requirements.
Clinics review:
Medical history
Weight and age eligibility
Any special requirements
Blood type compatibility
Step 3: Access & Registry
Once approved, your rabbit is added to the active donor registry. You provide BCB with:
Keys or keybox codes for emergency access
Your phone number, email, and text contact
Best times to reach you
Security: All access codes are stored securely with coded labels (no identifying information).
Step 4: Emergency Call
When a clinic needs a donor, we contact you immediately via phone, text, and email. If you're available, we coordinate transport within 1-2 hours.
What happens:
BCB picks up your rabbit in a secure carrier
Transport in climate-controlled vehicle
Veterinarian assesses blood compatibility
If compatible, transfusion occurs
Your rabbit is observed post-procedure
BCB returns your rabbit home
